"It Is Finished!" What does that mean?

March 29, 20233 min read

It is finished. This is the last thing Christ said when He was on the cross. What does that mean? Well, originally, we would think the ordeal was over because, right after that, He gave up the cross and died. So it has finished the crossover. But there's a whole lot more than that.

What does it mean?

1. Paid in full

The first thing I want to tell you is that it means paid in full. When you had a debt at the time of Christ, "it is finished" was what was written across that bill when you paid it off. So the debt that we owed God for our sin has been paid in full. Christ paid for it. It's written across the debt that we owed; you don't owe that anymore. It is done!

2. Old covenant

Another thing that He finished was the Old Covenant. He fulfilled the law. The law was there to teach us. We can't keep the law; we have to have a Savior. And the Savior came, and He fulfilled the law for us, so the old covenant was done; it is finished.

3. Separation from God

Another huge, amazing, and most wonderful thing is that our separation from God was finished. You see, sin separated us; we could not be one with Him. We could not have His Spirit in us as we do today because we were separated from Him. We had this curse of sin upon us, and that was removed; it was finished. Our separation from God, our curse, was taken care of at the cross.

4. Death

Another thing that was finished was death. We died in Christ and are born again because of His resurrection. So the sentence of death is finished because of the cross. You see, we were bought and redeemed by Christ at the cross. No longer can we be separated from God; it is finished. No longer would we be slaves to sin. It is finished. The chasm between us and God was removed forever.

Our debt was paid. It is finished! Next time you read that in Scripture, think about how big of a statement that is. It's not the cross, the pain, or the punishment was finished; it is so much more. So don't let the evil one convince you that he's still owed to you because it was finished at the cross. Don't let him tell you that you still have to earn your salvation. We can't earn our salvation. The Lord showed that to us or told us that He paid the price and gave us salvation by His grace. Don't let him convince you that you are separate from God. You know why? Because of the cross, that separation is finished, and His spirit came to live within us.

So what do we do now? We seek after him. We can come boldly into the throne room as His child because Christ finished all that needed to be done on the cross. We can fall on our knees and express eternal gratitude. The cross was a horrific punishment that should have been ours, and He took it for us. We can put on our new creation selves.

We have the mind of Christ. We need to start using that. We can grow up into the word because nothing's holding us back. We can separate ourselves from the world so that we no longer belong to it. Act like it, think like it, and feel like it. It is finished. Live it and connect deeply with the Lord, who did it for you.

Changed

Every day I wake up so grateful and aware of His intimate presence in my life! Now I no longer feel I have to look over my shoulder & wonder if I'm "doing enough" or "being enough" to please Him. God gets all the praise and glory for the work He has done. It's amazing to live in Joy!

Grateful

I'm still stunned. Those memories that haunted me don't bother me at all now. Instead, when I do think about them, and it isn't often, I just feel the peace of Christ.

I am forever grateful for what Dr. West has done for me. I am healed and free!
