There are a lot of reasons we might want to run from God. Shame over something we have done. Fear of His power and punishment. Wanting to do things our way or because we might be planning a sin we know we shouldn’t. 

Or, we may not actually believe His love and care for us and want to hide like Adam did in the garden. 

But, no matter how much we try, we cannot escape His presence.

“You know when I sit down and when I stand up..You observe my travels and my rest…Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?…” 

Heaven, hell, darkness and light, the bottom of the ocean or to the edge of the world, God is always with us. 

When we want to run from God it is because we have a wrong understanding of Him. It must be, for His love for us never fails or wavers. He is always for us, guiding us and helping us. We have His approval, we are significant to Him and we are safe in His covenant to us. Why in the world would we want to run from that?

He isn’t looking to punish us or do us wrong. Christ took all of our punishment 2,000 years ago. He isn’t on His throne disappointed and angry for we are covered with the righteousness of Christ. He is here, with us, loving us – His children.

“God, how precious are your thoughts are to me; how vast their sum is! If I counted them, they would outnumber the grains of sand; when I wake up, I am still with you.”

When we feel the urge to run from God we actually need to stop dead in our tracks, turn and run to Him. In His arms we find what we really want – home. Here we can rest. Here we are eternally accepted. Here is our life and love and hope. 

Like the prodigal son returning in shame, the Father greets him with open arms and brings him back into full restoration and relationship. He plans how to reestablish him as the heir, cleans him up, places new, clean garments on him and has a feast to celebrate his return.

We cannot outrun God for He is already where we are headed. We can run to Him so He can teach us, guide us, care for us and make us whole. He watches for us to return and His arms are opened wide.
