Christian Counseling Must Change
It is only God that brings true healing
It's going to get me in trouble.
He is God of the impossible so nothing less than complete and permanent healing from trauma and abuse should be acceptable. Those that come for Christian counseling should expect their lives to be changed to better reflect who they are in Christ. And, as counselors, that is our job to ensure that they do.
When a client leaves the office, they should do so with praise on their lips and amazement at their great God and what He has done for them. They should know themselves better and connect with Christ in ways that they only dreamed possible.
We have a God of restoration, joy, and power. The problem is that we teach secular, humanistic ways of therapy as “Christian” counseling.
We place ourselves under a state that insists we use their ways even as they oppose our God. Why do they get to set the standard for us? We should be radically different. Christians are to be separate, different, peculiar in life. Our counseling should also reflect that.
How can we call ourselves Christian counselors when Christ is not an integral part of our work?
I spoke at a breakfast for professional Christian counselors a few years back. My topic was “Partnering with Christ for full healing of trauma and abuse.” As I spoke, the counselors looked at me like deer caught in the headlights.
So I asked, “How many of you are bringing Christ into your sessions?” Not one of the forty-two counselors raised their hands. Then I asked, “How many of you know how to bring Christ into your sessions?” Again, not a single one raised their hand. How can this be?!
A prayer beginning and ending a session with the world’s ways in the middle is not Christian counseling.
Christ said that He came to heal the brokenhearted and to set the captives free. Either such healing and freedom are possible as He said, or He lied and we better use worldly ways after all.
We either believe Him irrelevant or omnipotent. It cannot be both.
Where is the true power in your Christian counseling? It is not in CBT or EMDR or any other modality. It is in His person and presence in the counseling office.
HE is the great Healer, the great Counselor. Is He not invited into the session with us?
Sadly, I don’t hear them come from standard "Christian counseling."
Yet, my clients for the past two decades have those testimonies. They are receiving astonishing healing and complete freedom from their past.
I’m not helping them to tolerate their life and painful memories, I’m connecting them with Life Himself and they are being transformed.
...The most broken hearts are so healed that we can’t find the scars after our sessions.
...PTSD is no longer running lives and anxiety is changed to peace.
...The most imprisoned soul is easily set free with Christ in the room.
These should be expected outcomes for every person that comes for Christian counseling.
Without Christ in our sessions, no one gets truly healed, yet the church insists their counselors use worldly ways and have state approval.
Their standard is set by a world that hates our God.
I had a church tell me that I am not qualified to counsel at their church because I deliberately don’t hold state licensure but rather hold a national Christian license. My not having state approval disqualified me for Christian counseling?
I went this route purposefully. I don't want the world telling me what I can and cannot say to my clients. I don't want them regulating morality that is not Biblically based in my sessions. I personally can’t stand before Him having held the world’s standards above His.
I don’t answer to the world and never will. But, this megachurch does. It does not matter that my clients are getting healed. That state paper has to be worshipped and obeyed.
Yet, I have a Ph.D. in Clinical Pastoral Counseling, a Master of Divinity, and clients that are receiving full healing from the pain of their past. That church is right, I’m not qualified to bring the intolerable, worldly “recovery” upon which they insist their “Christian” counselors practice.
Those with severe trauma are told that they will always be broken, that they cannot fully recover but life can be made better with some secular counseling methods.
It is a flat-out lie that one never can recover from trauma. I’ve seen hundreds so healed. Not only is full recovery possible, but nothing less should ever be acceptable to the client or to the counselor if we are to call what we do "Christian" counseling.
My heart breaks for those seeking Christ and His healing touch only to receive what the world has to offer.
When I have talked about this before, people have hated me. That's okay. I don't care. What I do care about is that my sisters and brothers in Christ receive healing from the Lord. As they do, they connect with Him deeply and in ways they only previously imagined.
Christian counseling is discipleship.
We remove obstacles to joy with the Lord in whatever form they come in. We connect them to Him, teaching, bringing healing, and equipping them to do daily life with Him.
There is so much more we can do in Christ with our clients. Trauma is not permanent. Full healing can happen quickly and permanently. Why is saying that controversial? Because the evil one does not want us to be healed and God therefore glorified.
If what I have said has rocked your boat a bit and you want more information, I'd love to talk with you. I even have a book I can give you to explain in detail what I do.
If you are a Christian counselor and you have felt that there has to be more, that real healing from the Lord must be possible, then contact me.
I've been bringing full and permanent healing to my clients for two decades. I can train you to do the same. Yes, our worldly counseling training is very valuable, and you will still use much of it. But, you also need to know how to work with the Lord to bring actual healing to your clients.
If you are intrigued, interested, and moved in your spirit then let's talk this through. My vision is that every "Christian" counselor can bring Christ's healing to all of their clients. Now, that would impact the world!

The first time I heard myself laugh, really laugh, was after the weekend breakthrough with Kim West. Life is supposed to have joy but my abuse had stolen my ability to experience it.
Just one weekend and my life is completely different. I laugh a lot these days because God has completely healed me from the abuse.
The sessions I had with Kim were amazing! She encourages, empathizes and is compassionate. Always pointing us to Christ. God is using Kim in a mighty way no doubt about that and God has truly gifted her with the ability to speak truth in such a short time.
God has gifted Kim with a uniqueness and style all of her own, she is being led by the Spirit and is willing to use her gifts and talents as the Lord leads. Kim radiates the love of Christ and the Holy Spirit within her is very powerful.
The intensive therapy program has saved my life. I am so blessed to continue to work with Kim through my therapy and couldn’t be anymore joyful after this last weekend. The intensive work that was put into one weekend saved my life. I found meaning and purpose and want to be alive. My love and understanding of God is so strong. I couldn’t be any more thankful during this time.
You became a counselor to help your sisters and brothers in Christ to be healed but you haven't found the training you received to actually bring that healing. That's because it can't.
Only our great God heals completely, permanently and quickly.
Do you want to learn how to work with the Lord to bring your clients the joy of healing, the freedom from their pain and shame?
