Awful to Awe-Filled

May 28, 20254 min read

Is life happening to you or for you?

Seriously. Where does your mind go, or more correctly, where do you let your mind go when bad things happen?

It’s all about your viewpoint. There is a difference between seeing something as awful and changing perspective to see the awe that is always there.

In my life I’ve had horrendous trauma. At the time, I could see no good in it or from it. It is only now, after healing, that I see God’s presence and purpose in allowing those bad things to happen to me. I now know His grief that His daughter was hurt but also His promise that He will bring something wonderful from that something horrible. He has.

Life this side of eternity is, what word should I use, traumatic at best for all of us. Just being in a fallen world, with fallen people and fallen angels is trauma inducing. Being apart from the presence of the Lord is beyond painful. It is truly awful that sin entered the world.

But, God.

He came. He lives with us in this sometimes nightmare and He is bringing us home in spite of it and through it. Awe begins.

God spoke and all that is became into existence because of His words. Matter. Physics. Light. Life. Us. We begin to know this magnificent God. Awe fills our minds.

The size of the universe He created is pretty incomprehensible. Yes, we can see some of the breath of it but perhaps it is like explaining color to someone born blind. You can travel at the speed of light for a billion years and not reach the other side. And, God knows the name of every star, planet and quantum particle in it. Awe grows exponentially.

Then, among all of that, He knows YOUR name. He chooses to know you, the number of hairs on your head, every day of your life here and into eternity. You are loved in the midst of this vast universe. You are known and wanted. He is with you right now and it is His joy to be with you.

This powerful, loving God who knows all from beginning to end is totally able to direct your life in the midst of the fallen creation. Regardless of what has been good or beyond bad in your life He uses it all on your behalf.

When I view my life, the good, bad and the ugly, from God’s perspective things change. I look at it through His holiness and it is different. I deliberately see it from His goodness, grace, mercy, and love, wisdom and power. Not only did He know what would happen, He knew what needed to happen to transform it for good.

Here’s the kicker, I don’t always want to give up my perspective. I don’t want to trust Him or believe He is good when such evil has come my way. I don’t get how He let what happened happen or how He will bring good from bad.

It is a choice of faith. Either He lies or tells the truth. His promises are either real or a fraud. He is God Almighty or He is not.

One of the things I had to do in my healing was accept who God is while letting go of my need to fully understand why things happened. It was a deliberate choice of my will to say, “Lord if there was any other way that would have been better You would have made that happen instead. Since You did not, I will trust Your wisdom and believe that You will indeed bring eternal good from this.”

As I went through this God only said, “Can I love you now?” What I had held against Him was in the way. My unbelief in His goodness made me keep Him at arm’s distance. It was time to choose to believe or walk away.

I let God love me. I allowed Him access to my wounds and He not only brought healing, He brought Himself. The sweetness and joy of His presence is far and above the pain I’ve felt. Where we are now is so worth it.

There is awe available to you as there has been for me. I moved from awful to awe-filled.
