All Of Life Is On The Edge Of Eternity

May 29, 20252 min read

Is it today? Is today the day that I die?

Most of us aren’t thinking much about when or how we will die. We are just busy moving through our day and planning out our future.

Let’s say that your future takes you to your 95th year. That means that you will have lived almost two decades beyond the normal life span. Here’s the catch: it is still the blink of an eye compared to eternity. Whether 5 years or 95 years, it is all incredibly short.

Why so morbid today, Kim? We had a family member die last month and my husband was diagnosed with a terminal disease a couple of weeks ago. So, I guess you could say that life, death and eternity are on my mind right now. Yet, we all walk on the precipice of eternity.

It takes only one step to leave the earth and walk into forever.

I live at the base of the Mogollon Rim (pronounced, “Mug-e-yon” in case you were wondering). It is 7,500 feet-high, 200-miles long, quite gorgeous and deadly if you take that one step to your right. I have come to realize that is quite descriptive of life itself.

Life can be gorgeous, awe inspiring, dangerous and filled with life to be experienced. And, always we know that this day could be our last.

If we actually lived this way? Might we live a bit differently?

There are days when I just need to turn off my brain and rest my body - like for the entire day. Laying on the couch, binging something on Netflix, going in and out of consciousness, and getting up only to eat and let the dogs in and out and in and out and in and out…

Those are actually necessary and restorative days, that is, when they are rare and happen because everything in me says, “STOP!” Self-care is necessary. But, the rest of the days I need to remember the precipice and get at life. I don’t want to waste a single day of noticing God’s grace, joying in His presence, and seeing what is around the bend.

So, “What do you want to do today, Lord?” One day His answer will be, “To take you home.” What a glorious day that will be! It can also be a glorious day today, here at the base of the Rim, working, loving, cleaning, hugging, you name it. All it takes is for me to choose to count my days and make each one I have left  here matter.
